It may come as a complete surprise, but this Southern girl has never before eaten at Cracker Barrel, the ubiquitous (they're every where, not just in the South) Southern-themed country cooking chain.
Why? There was that whole anti-gay policy of theirs in the early 90's (I never forget), and, hey, lookie, I missed this, but it seems they discriminated based on race in the 2000's (don't worry, I'll never be back).
So, why dinner now? Caught driving in that East Coast snow storm of December 2009, we decided to call it quits in Virginia (good thing, because the highway was littered with stranded cars when we woke up) for a hotel and the nearby Cracker Barrel. Lame excuse, but it is what it is.
The plate you see above is their veggie plate incorporating most of the veggies that are meat-free (nothing out of the ordinary there with country cooking). The corn is straight out of the can. The sweet carrots are mechanically whittled "baby" carrots. The macaroni and cheese is Velveeta-esque. The biscuits taste like those from a fast food chain (I do like fast food biscuits for guilty pleasure reasons, but much prefer homemade biscuits). Cornbread was skipped because it's not vegetarian (nothing out of the ordinary here, either — boxed cornbread mixes often contain lard).
Really, I was expecting a little more effort on Cracker Barrel's part. I've had better at cafeterias.

I feel for ya, CB is truly awful. Nic hates 99% of chains, which in the suburbs, limits your choices by 99%! I don't get why people love CB when there are plenty of authentic diners you can get better quality, and better tasting, food.
I call this "Yellow Food".
The only thing only found redeeming at Cracker Barrel is the Maple Syrup in the Gift Shop can be used at the nearest Waffle House on the good ol' Pecan Waffle.
I can understand that you had no choice but to eat @ CB because of the weather. Did you really expect decent vegetarian cuisine enough to blog about it? What's next, McDonalds?
Chris - The beauty (or ugly, frivolous, and ridiculous part)of a blog is that I can publish what ever I please. And the main point of this post is to make those who do eat or might consider eating at Cracker Barrel aware of Cracker Barrels' past discriminatory practices.
Chris, Taylor has done some vegetarians and vegans a favour, letting them know what to avoid (everything) at Cracker Barrel lest they want a very uncomfortable 2 hour car ride till the nearest bathroom. Also, critiquing a restaurant for others to see could inspire them to change! It's a long shot, but you never know.
Taylor, as a vegan who often takes road trips with my omni family, I appreciate this post! :)
luckypink - Ooh, I have a posse! ;) Thanks for reading, and I'm glad I can help fellow vegetarians and vegans navigate the restaurants out there.
I have been curious about Cracker Barrel for a good long time. Thanks for reporting on their blemished past and current offerings. I won't be eating here unless I'm stuck in a snow storm ;-)
Having been corralled into CB on a couple of occasions (generally grandparent-related), I must attest to the relative yumminess of that okra. Not phenomenal, but definitely pretty tasty. And for veggies, a definite highlight of the "veggie plate".
So strange but I have such an affinity for Cracker Barrel it's unreal. Being from California, the closest one is about 6 hours away.
Been vegetarian for 15 years and I adore their veggie plate, mostly because it's the type of food I don't typically eat out here (with the exception of Stuff I Eat in Inglewood, CA that has AMAZING soul food) so that may have something to do with my love.
Obviously can't excuse their past mistakes in regards to corporate responsibility and workers rights but at least they paid for it (in reputation and financially).
So I am the lone voice saying anytime I have a chance to eat CB, I will. Don't judge me =)
I have to say this is the first time I have ever wrote a comment. I worked at a cracker barrel for 2 years. About 90% of the food is homemade(dumplings, mac&ceese mashed pot. AND YES EVEN THE BISCUITS AND CORN BREAD) If you like good old fashion homestyle cooking you will love the food. As far as the veggie plate goes be happy you found such an option to choose from, at most restaurants where i come from you would have ended up with a grilled cheese and a salad. OH AND NOT TO BURST YOUR VEGATARIAN BUBBLE BUT THE OKRA IS COOKED IN THE SAME OIL AS FRIED PORK CHOPS AND CHICKEN STIPS.
Yep, CB has stated that all fried vegetables are fried in the same oil as meat. My granddaughter and I ate here once and we both felt I'll. I had pancakes and they tasted like meat. Maybe they just have so much meat in their kitchen that it infuses everything. CB stated that their pancakes are vegetarian, but they didn't taste that way to either of us. The eggs also tasted rancid. Had to wonder if maybe they used lard for cooking both. I am terrified to go back.
