Pig Out BBQ Pit

A reader recently called my attention to the fact that Pig Out BBQ Pit, with locations in downtown West Chester and Glen Mills, serves vegetarian barbecue alongside the normal meat barbecue. I said, "sign me up," and then did little poking around the internet to find their menu and see what others had to say about the place.

Main Line Today voted Pig Out "Best NC BBQ" in 2009, but, interestingly, over on WC Dish, a great food blog focusing mainly on West Chester eats that also has listings of restaurants where readers can comment, had widely conflicting opinions of Pig Out, and even a comment from the owner speculating that the negative comments were from jealous competitors.

So what's the real deal? Were there comments from those out to sabotage, and possibly even comments from those close to the owner hyping the place (oh, both happen all the time), or was it all just simply people with differing opinions? (Update: Do check out the comments on this post!) There's only one way to find out, and that's to go and form your own opinion.
First, we had to choose which location. The Glenn Mills location in a renovated 18th century blacksmith shop won out simply because they offer two free beers (Bud, Bud Light, Miller Lite, or Yuengling Lager) to diners who choose to eat on the premises. Free beer does not apply at the West Chester location.
Even with free beer, no one seemed to opt for the dining in option at the Glen Mills location when we were there, but there was a brisk takeout action going on when we first arrived.
The haul: Two small vegetarian spicy chicken sandwiches, coleslaw, twice baked potato with cheddar cheese, mac and cheese, corn muffin, and Yeungling beer.
But wait...these are real chicken sandwiches!

When ordering, we originally asked for the vegetarian bbq sandwiches, to which one of the two college-aged boys had to ask the other if they even had any. They didn't. He said they had the chicken. (Just so I get you straight here, in the vegetarian bbq department, Pig Out offers what they call a vegetarian bbq sandwich and a vegetarian spicy chicken sandwich) So, to be clear, since the boy said chicken and not veggie chicken, I said, "So, you don't have the veggie bbq, but you've got the veggie chicken?" Then proceeded to order two veggie chicken sandwiches. This was obviously very complicated for the two boys.

It turns out, the Glen Mills location had neither the veggie bbq nor the veggie chicken. We were not charged for the sandwiches, although the boys did briefly argue (not in a heated way) that we did order the chicken. Not cool.

Stuck my finger in the honey mesquite sauce and spicy sauce topping the sandwich, though. The honey mesquite is the redder sauce to the left, and is an extremely sweet ketchup-based sauce with mustard tones. The spicy sauce is the darker sauce to the right, and is also a very sweet ketchup sauce, but less so than the mesquite sauce, and not really spicy. The spicy sauce tastes exactly like the barbecue sauce from Kraft.

Other barbecue sauces available are mild, hot, raspberry chipotle, and buffalo wing sauce. Absolutely no vinegar or light tomato sauce available on the menu, which begs the question, how did Main Line Today award Pig Out BBQ Pit "Best NC BBQ" when there are no North Carolina-style barbecue sauces at Pig Out?If getting served chicken wasn't bad enough, the corn muffins are the kind you buy from Costco -- very little corn meal and dessert-like sweet. Does any one eat these things, outside of business meetings and desperation?
Does that mac and cheese look gluey? It is. And bland and a little chewy. And unbelievably, it's not the worst mac and cheese I've ever had. It's barely passable, though.
I laughed when my partner ordered the twice baked potato with cheddar, but this small, limp potato was the best thing we ordered. It's kinda hard to mess up a potato (well, you can under cook it) with cheese on top.
The creamy and sweet coleslaw tasted like it came from one of those large food service containers, and I wouldn't be surprised if it did.
And this is what we left behind. We ate the twice baked potato because it was the best thing, and we ate the mac and cheese and a few bites of the coleslaw because we were starving.

Needless to say, I was very upset with driving out to Glen Mills and not getting to try the veggie bbq, but I was even more upset about the sides. The Costco muffin (or what ever brand it is) is just unforgivable. What we could eat of our meal was comparable to a meal in a school cafeteria.
I never got the veggie bbq sandwich I originally wanted, and thought the review would be incomplete without trying one, so called the West Chester location first to see if it was available before trekking out there. It was, so we headed out thattaway.

This time the owner was at the helm of the register in West Chester, and was much more engaging and, well, intelligent than the two hapless boys at the Glenn Mills location. The owner asked for our feedback on the vegetarian bbq sandwich and vegetarian spicy chicken sandwich, since he's never tasted them.

What? Shouldn't you taste what you serve? The vegetarian bbq sandwich is made of a shredded dark "beef" that my partner said had a brisket-like taste. We got the hot bbq sauce since the spicy was not to our liking. The hot bbq sauce is still a sweet ketchup-based sauce, but actually is spicy (hotheads will think it's not hot, wimps will think it's hot), and is the better of the three sauces we sampled.

Sandwiches are served on a soft hoagie roll, which suits the fillings fine. I know this is hoagie territory, but hoagie rolls are not the best bread for all sandwiches. A soft hamburger bun would do nicely here, providing less bread and a more authentic Southern barbecue experience if that's what Pig Out is aiming for.
Same sauce and same roll for the vegetarian spicy chicken sandwich, but the veggie meat is lighter and has breading on it, from, I assume, when it was a whole breaded chicken patty or nugget before it was shredded. The breading soaked up the sauce and became this weird, gunky, saucy substance.

If you have to go vegetarian, get the veggie bbq sandwich and skip the veggie chicken. (And I did tell the owner that the veggie bbq sandwich was better than the veggie chicken, and that the breading on the chicken was weird.)
We also tried the potato salad, since we missed it the first go round. Very creamy (almost soupy) and very sweet...just like from a large food service container! Now, I'd hate to call the potato salad and coleslaw food service items, if they're not, but I've never tasted coleslaw or potato salad that tasted like these except for when they did come from a food service container.

The vegetarian sandwiches are decent, although nothing you couldn't make at home with some soy meat, a hoagie roll, and a bottle of barbecue sauce. The gesture to the vegetarian community is nice, though.

Of course, the true testament to a barbecue joint is the real meat, but I can't speak to that. For me though, the true testament are the sides, and Pig Out failed miserably. Obviously they don't think it's worth the effort to make all of the sides from scratch, but it makes a world of difference. And it's easy, too. Well, maybe not as easy as buying from Costco.

Gordon Ramsay, are you out there? Pig Out needs you.

Wow...you make some great points in your review. The pics of those sides are really telling. I think you're right re: potato salad and cole slaw. They look like they came from one of those institutional-sized vats used to serve large quantities of people. I'm thinking, like, school cafeterias or nursing homes.

And I'm with you on the "NC BBQ" thing. The fact that they didn't offer a Eastern-style vinegar-based sauce is a little crazy. THAT is NC BBQ!! And I actually prefer that to the tomatoey-, syrupy-sweet sauce that's slathered on Midwest BBQ.

What a disapointment! At least you got 2 free beers... :S

That's some commitment right there for less then stellar BBQ - Glen Mills AND West Chester. We appreciate your commitment!

Why would you go to a BBQ place and order vegetarian BBQ? Why wouldn't you order the N.C. BBQ- its what they do best!

Didn't you try their award winning N.C. pulled pork bbq sandwich? Or even their hickory smoked bbq sandwich? This is a pork joint. I remember they didn't even carry chicken when they first opened.

This is one of the best pork bbq places around, who cares about the sides. I go for pork. Their ribs are really good too. They have two types, baby back and st. louis style marinated with a dry rub. All good/fall off the bone.

I've been to pig out a number of times. I always order the North Carolina BBQ- they cook the pork in the sauce, you don't add it like the red sauce. They even have coleslaw for the top. If you get your order to go they put the meat in a container and your roll separate so it doesn't get soggy. Brilliant!

It is my understanding that when you order a large sandwich it comes on a round kaiser roll. The small and jumbo are on hoagie rolls.

I can't believe you would throw someone under the bus with this review.

Go try the Pork at the Pig Out and you will understand why it is the best pork bbq around.

TJ - Welcome to my blog. I'm vegetarian! Even if the pork is fabulous (which I mentioned that I cannot speak to) everything else you serve cannot be dismal.

I'm not the owner, just a good customer, but this restaruant has been around for 3 years and cannot possibly be as bad as you say. I enjoy the mac, coleslaw and potato salad. At least the mac isn't stouffers or kraft!
That's just my opinion. The veggie bbq is something new- i never seen it on the menu- they are probabally trying to appease the vegans in WC. At least give them props for trying to offer vegans a new place to eat. I noticed you didn't try the green beans or baked apples- which i love to put over vanilla ice cream.

They opened a second restaurant in their second year and from what i understand do a really good business.

I haven't found anything that was really 'bad' from pig out. Some menu items have better days than others i'm sure.

I am defending pig out, because I have been a loyal customer since they opened and i don't think you did them justice. Especially with the N.C. BBQ. It is the best!

TJ- Please take the time to read my post. I did give Pig Out props for offering a vegetarian option, and said it was a "nice gesture." You'll also see that I visited that second location.

I respect you opinion, as you should respect mine, so please do not email the commenters on this post and call me a "farce." Yeah, I caught you!

Taylor said...

TJ - Also...while you claim you're just a customer, in your email to a commenter you said, "we actually take the time to cook..." so I'm gonna have to question your affiliation with Pig Out.

Taylor,

I am the owner of the Pig Out, I want to apologize for TJ's behavior. He is an employee of mine who works when he is home from college. I appreciate his enthusiam for my restaurant but I do not approve of his actions.

I read your review and understand your concerns. I will take your review under consideration as I continually try to improve my menu.

The vegan bbq is being met with mixed reactions, it is after all vegan bbq. I am not a big tofu fan I did taste the sandwich and for something vegan..I didn't think it was all bad. The chicken kinda tasted like chicken. I did prefer the meat substitute.

I don't know what good vegan bbq should taste like. We recently added it to our menu and need to improve on what we have. This is where your feedback comes in handy. If it is no good, i don't want to serve it. Nothing worse than getting someone excited about food, even if it is vegan, then them being disappointed when it is sub par.

We do not make the cole-slaw and potato salad but it is not a box from sysco, we shopped multiple deli's for what we though was pretty good stuff. I am sorry you didn't like it.
The corn muffins are from a baker we sell dozens of these every week- the only complaint i've recieved is that we had no butter packets.

The mac n cheese i do make. It is purposefully not souped up...we have a lot of kids that eat our mac and prefer it plain, there is salt and pepper on the table to use at your discretion. Some customers would prefer we use Kraft but my wife hates the processed mac and cheese mixes.

The BBQ sauces are definately not kraft or any other grocey store bbq sauce. We brought on multi-award winning sauces. I'm sorry if it is not your cup of tea.

Our North Carolina BBQ sauce is indeed my wife's recipe and is cooked into the pork, not just added on top. This is what makes ours sooo goood!

Thank you for the review,

I hope your future visits are better tasting.

BBQ King of NC - Thank you for taking the time to explain your side.

Here's my feedback again: the veggie bbq sandwich (not the veggie chicken) is not bad at all for a vegetarian sandwich. Sure, it ain't real bbq, but vegetarians know this. Put it on a hamburger roll for down-South authenticity.

Many delis use boxed food service potato salad and coleslaw, so I'd be sure to ask the deli. And then ask another employee on a different day! I'd also ask the baker if they bake their own goods on premises, because that muffin is pretty darn identical to the ones from Costco.

Best of luck improving the menu. Reviews are not only helpful to readers, but to owners!

We do put our large sandwiches on round kaiser rolls, not hamburger. We tried a hamburger roll and about 100 other styles of roll and with the juicyness of our pork, the hoagie roll and the kaiser rolls held up the best.

If I would use a softer roll - your review would then say..'it's a shame the roll was so soggy, they should use a better one'- LOL Am i right?

We even thought about just using white bread which is common down south but the soggy problem was even worse.

So we thought we'd try to make it a better sandwich by getting a roll that could hold up to the juiciness of a big pulled pork bbq. Especially the North Carolina BBQ. That is one juicy, mouth watering, roll soaking sandwich. The sauce is cooked into the hickory smoked meat.

Did you know? if you get a large or jumbo sandwich to go, we put the meat and sauce in a separate container and wrap your roll separately.. so when you got home you didn't have a soggy mess!

So i'll be sure to check the deli on the authenticity of my salad products, but they were the best of what we tried..and we tried lots and lots of deli's- we tried the big box brand and didn't like them.

Thanks again

I thought it was pretty good. Good idea to only serve pork and chicken. and not venturing far from the tree. NC style was good cause it wasn't boring pulled pork, thought the sauces might need some work but what ever i wasn't going for sauce, was goign for some pork and ribs.
Dude the icecream is good, an Cheap!
Beer selection could be better, but then agian it was free. no complaints i'll go back for more.

You know, guys, today's spurt of comments reeks of something fishy. Let me make you aware that I can see your actions when you visit my blog, how you got here, and a whole bunch more - like when you visit your Facebook page (personal FB url wasn't a good idea, Chris), and then your friends on Facebook come over here and comment.

Hey Y’all – In my post did I not allude to the fact that comments on restaurants can get ugly and deceptive?

I just got an email to my blog Gmail account from Tony, the owner of Pig Out, requesting that I take down the comments from “TJ” and “monkybmx”. Tony sent this email to me using the same email address he used to email a commenter on this post to ream my post, call me “a farce” and tell that commenter to “be careful what you read.” Noted, Tony! No one will ever believe any comments praising Pig Out ever again.

Sorry, Tony, but I am not taking down the comments. I’m also sorry this had to play out this way, and I truly do wish Pig Out the best of luck. Concentrate on making the food better, and everyone will forget about the online deception played out over here, and, I’m sure, on WC Dish.

It is a shame what lengths some people will go to.
I find most of your reviews to be spot on...and I'm not even a vegetarian! (But I love to try everything...and I love to try new places. Therefore blogs such as yours come in handy when venturing out into unknown restaurant territory). I said "most" because after all...we all have different tastes...we're all...snowflakes haha.
But I enjoy how thorough you are on your review whether you give the place a thumbs up or thumbs down you seem to try a variety to be fair. I especially enjoy the pictures you take (it's awesome to get a preview before I try something myself.)

That said, I won't be going here. My husband is a huge BBQ fan and I'm a big fan of the sides. Mix the review/pictures with the shenanigans of the owner/employees...and I'll be steering clear of this place for sure!

In the hast of posting my last comment, I forgot to mention that the all of the comments from TJ and the last comment from BBQ King of NC (July 23 11:47am) came from the same ip address: 173.12.50.62 An unsigned email to a commenter disparaging me, and an email to me requesting comments from TJ and monkybmx be taken down from a person claiming to be the owner both came from tonys3108@***.com I'm putting this out there because this whole thing rubs me the wrong way, mostly the emailing to and harassing of my readers.

Taylor,

This is getting out of hand. Here's what happened. TJ was using my computer that I keep at the restaurant so the kids can listen to XM radio. I also use that computer when i am there.

When TJ realized that he has opened a can of worms, posed as me and tried to fix things. Sadly he made it worse.

I know your upset about all these posts, i want to apologize again. I don't think posting his email was quite right.

Taylor said...

BBQ King of NC - Yes it has gotten out of hand! I did not post the entire email address, just enough to see that it came from tonys3108. Are you saying "TJ" wrote me an email posing as "Tony" with a long sob story about the economy and his family, as well? Whatever happened, it was shady, and I don't think any explaining is going to help get Pigg Out out of the hole it's dug.

BBQ King of N.C. said...

If you don't mind, i'd like to dig some more.....

I would never give a sob story about my family situation on a public blog. Twas not me.

Our business is pretty good considering the economy. No sob story here.

The email address is rather easy to figure out, even with the asterisks.

If you've learned anything from this I hoped you learned that...

No good deed goes unpunished

The poor kid was just trying to help.

Now he's caused all this commotion on your blog. Once again, i want to apologize on behalf of my staff.

PLEASE ACCEPT THIS GUESTURE OF APOLOGY:

FREE VEGGIE Q AT THE WEST CHESTER LOCATION FOR ALL THOSE READING THIS BLOG. (just mention the blog, my staff will know about it. for heavens sake they caused this!)

I won't offer the free spicy chicken because you think it isn't good. As a matter of fact. I'm going to remove it from the menu, next printing. I appreciate your feedback, thanks again.

Also free green beans and baked apples w/cinnamon & brown sugar- after all you didn't try those.

After reading your blog again, i wonder, why you didn't see the n.c. bbq on the menu? You seem to lead people to belive we are lying or are confused about the N.C. BBQ (down with absolutes).

Be assured that mabels & other bbq places are absolutely trashing me on other blogs, even to the point where they say my meat is dry...in 3 years of biz we never had that complaint, because pork is what we do best, & i'd rather throw it out than serve it if it is bad. Same with the ribs- sides too.

I am currently trying to un-bland my mac with a smoked pepper seasoning i just ran across. (i wanted to add bacon but, i really want to give vegetarians an alternative to pitapit.)

Remember we offer a lunch in less than 5 min and less than $10.

I've come a long way in 3 years. We used to throw vegetarians out! LOL

no que for you! - but now we do.

All this has given me a headache, i need a beer. Happy Friday

Taylor said...

BBQ King of NC - Sob story about economy, story (not sob) about family, and request to take down comments is not on a public blog. It was sent to my blog email account.

Readers may decide to or decide not to take you up on your offer of free food as they wish, although the joke about throwing vegetarians out probably didn't win you any business.

I'm tired of dealing with you, and in an attempt to save you from damaging yourself any more, I'll publish your last comment, and then no more!

Wow. Reading all of the previous comments was...interesting. I find it doubly so when I see all of the shenanigans.

Taylor, by the way, I just wanted to throw you a high five for your maturity in all of this. While I am a fan of Pig Out (or have been in the past), I really enjoy your restaraunt reviews, and the fact that you are such a diligent (independent) reporter of the facts, pictures, and status of each restaraunt you visit. I especially admire how you note when you are expressing a personal opinion rather than an observation of fact.

Keep up the good work!

Emily - Thank you for your kind words, and it's always nice to hear that people appreciate my reviews. High five right back at ya!

Missy - Brain was buzzing while this was going on, so didn't mean to not acknowledge your kind words as well. I know you've been reading for a while and have commented before. I appreciate your readership!

Well I am a pig-eater! And a transplanted NC lady friend of mine and I are going to take a trip to Pig Out to give the pork a go. Don't necessarily want to extend the drama in this thread, but I'll feel obliged to post my and my friend's opinions after we've tried the piggy goodness.

You've handled the situation perfectly, Taylor. You're really one of the best and most thorough food reviewers I've ever read. I don't think anyone could ever say you're harsh or unfair. You're doing us all a service!

Taylor said...

DWA - Thank you. I know you are a contentious and critical eater, so I am very interested in your and your NC friend's opinion of the pork, and, of course, the sides.
